Rome's Cinecittà Studios: One Stop Shopping for Filmmakers
Europe's own miniature Hollywood, the birthplace and hub of lauded Italian cinema, is Cinecittà Studios in Rome, Italy.
Founded by Benito Mussolini in 1937 as a propaganda production machine, the immense studio has had a checkered history. Bombed by the Allies in World War II, nearly bankrupted in the 1980s, and partly destroyed by fire in 2007, it has continuously flirted with extinction yet remains one of the most prominent film industry hubs in the world. It has produced some of the most famous works in film and television, from Italian classics such as La Dolce Vita and Visconti's Death in Venice to international epics Ben-Hur and The Gangs of New York, and of course the BBC/HBO series Rome.
Over 5,000 production personnel live and work in Rome, second only to Hollywood and surpassing the talent pool of Bollywood, Hong Kong, New York, and Paris. This includes top cinema names such as Bertolucci as well as an extensive list of Italian craftspersons from Rome's artisan tradition.
It is also the only film location in the world to offer complete start-to-finish film services from “script to screen.” This includes everything from location managers and production accountants to marketing and promotion. In between they can furnish stunt crew, prosthetics specialists, editors, costumers, wranglers, and musicians. Crew members can also be brought to Rome from elsewhere through their partnership network.
Facilities include 22 stages, 300 production offices, 82 props sourcing locations, 25 digital processing suites, one 2.7 million gallon outdoor tank with bluescreen, one 25-acre backlot, and one 2,000 acre backlot located just outside Rome. They also offer technicians and facilities for set construction, costuming, cameras, grips, sound, film processing and printing, audio post-production, digital effects and CGI, and editing, as well as conservation and restoration of original film. For the crew they also offer a cafeteria, bank, post office, free parking, and 24-hour security.
They have also preserved sets from previous productions and can offer them or redress them for new films. There's a 500-foot section of 19th century Broadway built for Gangs of New York, a 260-foot submarine interior built for U-571, a village of Ancient Rome, a modern train, an amphitheater of Ancient Rome, a modern city street, and an earthquake gimbal.
A producer with a script could begin with a free budget consultation. Without leaving the campus she could then hire a full production crew, have sets built, and cast the entire film. Then she'd film on set or around the greater Rome area, processing and viewing dailies without even getting in the car. After wrap, she could immediately begin editing, scoring, and digital post-production, still without ever leaving campus. And then could begin marketing and distributing the film, using network partners from Rome's greater film industry.
This centerpiece of European cinema has a well-deserved reputation and a history of producing Academy Award-winning films.
